Overview

The Australian Garden Council was conceived from a growing concern about:

  • The reduction in educational standards in horticulture
  • Low apprenticeship entry levels into formal horticultural education
  • The collapse in basic gardening internship training in the last three decades
  • The drop in the participation rate in gardening population
  • The closure of Open Gardens Australia and the impact of the closure of community garden clubs on the broader community
  • The serious detriment to public amenity and health resulting from all of the above; and
  • The lack of awareness by local, state and federal governments to the global garden tourism industry
